Lay Ministries: Outreach

St. Albans Episcopal Church, Wilmington, Delaware

Adopt-a-Family

Each year, in preparation for Christmas, the congregation donates gift certificates in support of the Adopt-a-Family holiday gift assistance program. The Delaware Division of State Service Centers selects the recipient families as well as identifies acceptable gift certificates. For each family “adopted,” the head of household uses the gift certificates to purchase holiday gifts for family members. The program aids families in crisis: those struggling with illness, homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, or unemployment. For Christmas 2009, the church raised $3,570 to support 10 families.

The Claymont Food Closet

The Food Closet is a program of the Claymont Community Center that welcomes contributions of non-perishable foods dropped off at the church. Items particularly in need are listed in our monthly newsletter, The Grapevine.

In addition to food donations, St. Albans parishioners assist at the Food Closet by sorting and stocking food donations and making up bags of groceries for distribution. Cash contributions are also welcome and can be made by writing a check payable to St. Albans with Food Closet on the memo line or payable to the Claymont Community Center with Food Closet on the memo line.

We work at the Food Closet on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 am until ll.30 am. Click here to learn how you can help the Claymont Food closet.

Contact person is Sister Sheila Brigid Sharpe. Call her at 738-5681 or click here to send her an e-mail.

Directions to the Food Closet

The Food Closet is housed in the Claymont Community Center (the old Claymont High School Building) at: 3301 Green St., Claymont, DE 19703

When traveling to the Claymont Community Center from St. Albans, take Wilson Road until it dead ends at Harvey Road. Turn right onto Harvey Road and proceed east across I-95. Then, about one-half mile on, you will turn left on Green Street. There is sign directing you to the Community Center on the right side of Harvey Road at this corner. The Community Center is about six blocks up Green Street on the left hand side. (It is also the site of a New Castle County Library.) The Food Closet is accessed from the right side of the building. Walk down the side of building past the entrance to the Head Start Program. The entrance to the food closet is down a ramp that is just before you arrive at the trash dumpsters. Come down the ramp and ring the doorbell and join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors.

Emmanuel Dining Room

On an ongoing basis, we collect ingredients in preparation for going to the Emmanuel Dining Room at 500 Rogers Road in New Castle on the fourth Thursday of each month to cook and provide a lunch of lasagna, fruit, vegetables, and dessert. This outreach effort is done in support of the Ministry of Caring, and it is a gratifying way to serve the ongoing needs of the poor.

Mats and Pats

The Matriarchs and Patriarchs, better known as “Mats and Pats,” are a group of seniors who meet weekly in the parish hall to do volunteer work for non-profit organizations. The work usually involves preparing material for mailing or assembling packets of information. If no one needs our services, we might go out to lunch, take in a movie or just enjoy each others’ company.

We meet at 10:00 a.m. every Monday, breaking at noon for a brown bag lunch, before departing between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. As of January, 2008, the group has twelve members, mostly in their 80s. It is a caring and friendly mix of men and women who are always glad to welcome new members.

The Barnabas Fund

After his conversion to Christianity, Barnabas sold his land and turned the money over to the Apostles. He was known to the Apostles for his goodness and faith. The spirit of Barnabas lives on at Saint Albans through the Barnabas Fund. Saint Albans created the fund years ago when the church sold off approximately six acres of land. The leadership of the church invested the proceeds with the purpose of using the earned interest for Christian outreach. At the time, the vestry created the Barnabas Committee to oversee the funds and process applications for outreach grants. Anyone can apply for grants although preference is given to Saint Albans parishioners. Guidelines for the use of Barnabas Fund monies are as follows:
