The Vestry
“The Vestry is the legal governing and decision-making body of a parish church, consisting of the Rector and elected lay representatives. Its duties include calling the Rector, approving the budget, making policy, and approving expenditures. Each Vestry has a senior and junior Warden, both elected from among members of the Vestry either by the congregation or by the Vestry itself. Often Vestry members are also heads of parish committees or commissions, but each parish chooses its own way of structuring its Vestry.” (John N. Wall, A Dictionary for Episcopalians, p. 134.)
The Saint Albans Vestry consists of twelve members, four being elected each year for a three-year term. Our Vestry ordinarily meets once a month. The duties of our Vestry are to cooperate with the Rector for the promotion of the spiritual welfare of the congregation, to support the Rector in his/her work, to sustain and further the church’s mission, to authorize all contracts and conduct the church’s business, and to provide for payment of staff salaries and Diocesan & general church support.
